What is JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) ?
JIA is a chronic illness which is characterized by continual joint pain associated with swelling, and restricted movement. JIA affects one out of every thousand children in a variety of forms, and levels of severity. Since children are growing, it is important to prevent damage to the joints and bones with the aid of medicine and physiotherapy. Treatment is also important for maintenance of healthy social development. The eyes can also be affected (uveitis), making it important to have periodic eye examinations.
JIA is an autoimmune disorder, which means that the immune system malfunctions and attacks the body's organs and tissues, in this case the joints. JIA is not contagious. Each individual case of JIA is sub classified to determine the appropriate treatment.
