The Children’s Chronic Arthritis Association is the leading Charity in the UK run by parents and professionals involved in their care.  We offer emotional and practical support to maximise choices and opportunities and raise awareness of childhood arthritis in the community.  The Association was founded in 1990 and became a registered Charity in 1992.  CCAA provides a Support Network for the families, through our Area Family Contacts, who as parents themselves, know what it is like to live with this disease 24 hours a day.  These contacts receive regular training for their role at our AFC Workshops.

In 1993 we held our first JIA Family Support Week-End.  This event is an annual project for the Association.  The aims of these weekends are for the children with arthritis, their parents and siblings to enjoy and benefit from participating in both educational and recreational activities.  The Talks and Discussion groups cover topical subjects like Research, Management of JIA, Stress in the Family, Coping with JIA at school, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Social Services and Benefits.  There are also Group Discussions for the mothers, fathers, the children with JIA and their siblings.  These discussion groups have proved to be most useful and informative. During the weekend the Recreational activities, such as swimming, canoeing, archery, climbing tower and high ropes, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games are enjoyed by all the children and their parents.  CCAA both organises and funds this project which costs the Association around £15,000 (21,300 Euros) each year.

Our ‘Smile’ project provides children with arthritis with electric toothbrushes and we have recently launched two new projects, which will be Annual Monetary Grants for children with arthritis.  These are the Barbara Ansell Scholarship for support through Education and the James Herson Sponsorship for Sporting and Leisure Activities.

CCAA produces newsletters for its members and as part of the CHAT Alliance produces excellent Information booklets for parents of children and teenagers.  The Association has also been involved in a study, looking at “Improving the Quality of Life for Adolescents with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis”.

CCAA is committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children participating in activities or events organised by the Association and have a Child Protection Policy in place, which is reviewed annually.

The Children's Chronic Arthritis Association is a member of ENCA and joins with other European Countries in sharing information and having an opportunity of working together to promote help and awareness for these children throughout Europe.

For CCAA to run the Support Network, produce Information booklets and provide our various projects we rely completely on fund raising, donations and applying for grants. The Association is run by volunteers and gets no governmental aid.
